HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 28, 2011--Strayer Education, Inc. (Nasdaq: STRA) today announced financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2011. Financial highlights are as follows:

Three Months Ended June 30

  • Revenues for the three months ended June 30, 2011 increased 3% to $163.8 million, compared to $159.3 million for the same period in 2010, due to level enrollment and a tuition increase which commenced in January 2011.
  • Income from operations was $50.1 million compared to $58.7 million for the same period in 2010, a decrease of 15%. Operating income margin was 30.6% compared to 36.8% for the same period in 2010.
  • Net income was $29.6 million compared to $35.7 million for the same period in 2010, a decrease of 17%. Diluted earnings per share was $2.53 compared to $2.60 for the same period in 2010, a decrease of 3%, reflecting a lower share count due to share repurchases. Diluted weighted average shares outstanding decreased to 11,737,000 from 13,704,000 for the same period in 2010.

Six Months Ended June 30

  • Revenues for the six months ended June 30, 2011 increased 6% to $335.7 million, compared to $317.2 million for the same period in 2010, due to increased enrollment and a tuition increase which commenced in January 2011.
  • Income from operations was $109.4 million compared to $118.6 million for the same period in 2010, a decrease of 8%. Operating income margin was 32.6% compared to 37.4% for the same period in 2010.
  • Net income was $65.4 million compared to $72.0 million for the same period in 2010, a decrease of 9%. Diluted earnings per share was $5.34 compared to $5.25 for the same period in 2010, an increase of 2%, reflecting a lower share count due to share repurchases. Diluted weighted average shares outstanding decreased to 12,263,000 from 13,716,000 for the same period in 2010.

Balance Sheet and Cash Flow

At June 30, 2011, the Company had cash and cash equivalents of $50.6 million. The Company generated $87.4 million from operating activities in the first six months of 2011 compared to $87.9 million during the same period in 2010. Capital expenditures were $18.1 million for the six months ended June 30, 2011 compared to $22.6 million for the same period in 2010.

As previously announced, the Company entered into an amended and restated revolving credit and term loan agreement on April 4, 2011. This credit facility, which is secured by the assets of the Company, provides a $100.0 million revolving credit facility and a $100.0 million term loan facility with a maturity date of March 31, 2014. Proceeds from the term loan were used to pay off the $80 million outstanding at March 31, 2011 under the original revolving credit facility. At June 30, 2011, the Company had $100 million outstanding under its term loan and $15 million outstanding under its revolving credit facility.

During the three months ended June 30, 2011, the Company used $55.5 million to repurchase approximately 434,000 shares of stock at an average price of $127.73 as part of a previously announced stock repurchase authorization. During the six months ended June 30, 2011, the Company used $182.7 million to repurchase approximately 1,370,000 shares of stock at an average price of $133.32 per share. The Company’s remaining authorization for stock repurchases was $25.0 million at June 30, 2011. During the six months ended June 30, 2011, the Company paid regular, quarterly dividends of $25.2 million ($1.00 per share for each quarterly dividend).

For the second quarter 2011, bad debt expense as a percentage of revenues was 4.1% compared to 3.6% for the same period in 2010. Days sales outstanding was 12 days at the end of the second quarter of 2011, compared to 11 days at the end of the second quarter of 2010.

Student Enrollment

Enrollment at Strayer University for the 2011 summer term decreased 8% to 47,790 students compared to 52,221 students for the same term in 2010. Across the Strayer University campus and online system, continuing student enrollments decreased 5%, while new student enrollments decreased 21%. Global online students decreased 12%. Students taking 100% of their classes online (including campus based students) decreased 9%.

New Campus Openings

The Company announced today that Strayer University will open three new campuses for the fall academic term. Two campuses will be located in Chicago, Illinois, a new market for Strayer University. The third campus will be located in Dallas, Texas, its fourth campus in that market. These three new campuses, together with the five campuses opened earlier this year, complete the Company’s planned eight campus openings in 2011. In October, the Company intends to announce the number of new campuses Strayer University plans to open in 2012.

Board of Directors

The Company is also pleased to announce the addition of John T. Casteen to the Company's Board of Directors. Mr. Casteen is the President Emeritus of the University of Virginia. He also served as the President of the University of Connecticut and as the Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Shares and Options Outstanding

At June 30, 2011, the Company had 12,008,763 common shares issued and outstanding, and 100,000 stock options outstanding with an average exercise price of $107.28 and a remaining contractual life of 1.6 years.

Common Stock Cash Dividend

The Company announced today that its Board of Directors has declared its regular, quarterly cash dividend of $1.00 per share. This dividend will be paid on September 12, 2011 to shareholders of record as of August 29, 2011.


Business Outlook

Based on enrollments announced for the 2011 summer term, the Company estimates third quarter 2011 diluted EPS will be in the range of $1.04 to $1.06.
