RF Monolithics Reports Increased Gross Margins and Increased Net Income in Its First Quarter

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 11, 2011--RF Monolithics, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMI) today reported net income of $160,000 or $0.01 per share for its first quarter ended November 30, 2010. This compares favorably to a net loss for the comparable prior year first quarter ended November 30, 2009 of $102,000 or $0.01 per share and net income of $21,000 or $0.00 per share for the fourth quarter of its prior fiscal 2010. The prior year comparable quarter ended November 30, 2009, included $160,000 in costs related to the early termination of a bank agreement.

The Company reported sales of $8.5 million for the first quarter, representing a 1% increase from $8.4 million in sales for the first quarter of the prior year and essentially flat with sales of the previous sequential fourth quarter of fiscal 2010. The Company also reported gross margins in the first quarter of 35.4%, compared to 32.6% for the prior year and 33.1% for its trailing fourth quarter.

RFM’s President and CEO David M. Kirk said, “We are pleased to report increased gross margins and increased net income. Our product mix continues to improve. In the first quarter we recognized revenues in several high margin programs. Our overall sales have remained solid and in the past year we have effectively managed our business and have realized profits because of these efforts. We recently renewed our banking agreement for two years, enabling our revolving bank debt to be classified as a long term liability on our balance sheet.”

“As we look forward to the balance of fiscal 2011, we are focused on several product and market initiatives that if successful, will position us for growth. Product launches late in fiscal year 2010 are starting to gain traction, and we have recently expanded our efforts to promote our products more broadly via an awareness campaign. We continue to work with our collaboration partner, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Murata) with an initial focus on wireless communications module products,” Kirk said.

“While we look forward to the future, we also reflect on some of our historical accomplishments, such as our recent announcement that we had shipped over 100 million filters for North American satellite radios over the past ten years. We believe this is an example of RFM’s capability to engage in the design of products that are ideally suited to the needs of original equipment manufacturers and provide product and related support on a consistent basis for a lengthy period of time. This is the model we hope and intend to emulate in our strategy to penetrate the even larger M2M market,” Kirk stated.

Kirk also said, “While the second fiscal quarter has historically been seasonally our weakest quarter of the year, we are encouraged by an improving mix which enhances margins. Additionally, numerous new programs in joint development with our customers could provide additional business for us later in 2011. We have available a broad set of products that we believe are well suited to meet the needs of new and existing customers. As economic conditions permit and our customers’ programs ramp up, we believe that we will be positioned for growth.”

Highlights

  • First quarter 2011 gross profit margin was 35.4%, which was up 280 basis points from the prior year and 230 basis points from our previous fourth quarter due to improved product mix within our segments:
    • In comparison to the prior year, the improvement in overall gross margin was largely due to an improvement in gross margin for our Wireless Component segment, which increased in gross margin from 24.6% last year to 31.4% this year. This was largely due to shifts in product mix to higher sales of high margin military grade filters and internet timing frequency control modules and somewhat lower sales of automotive products. Gross margins for our Wireless Solutions segment, on the other hand, decreased slightly from 41.2% to 39.9% this quarter due to lower sales of high margin medical products.
    • In comparison to the previous quarter, the improvement in overall gross margin was largely due to an improvement in gross margin for our Wireless Solutions segment, which increased in gross margin from 34.1% last quarter to 39.9% this quarter. This was due to the significant increase in sales of high margin medical products and the absence of some additional manufacturing costs related to the introduction of relatively new products that occurred in the prior quarter. Gross margins for our Wireless Components segment, on the other hand, decreased slightly from 32.1% last quarter to 31.4% this quarter due to a higher mix of automotive products in the quarter.
  • Net income for the quarter increased to $160,000 in comparison to a $102,000 net loss for the prior year and net income of $21,000 for the previous quarter, largely as a result of these gross margin improvements.
  • We renewed our bank agreement for two years through November, 2012. Total bank debt increased $135,000 to just over $3.0 million. At the end of the quarter we had $2.75 million available but unused on our revolving credit bank line.

Additional Details:

  • Sales were up 1% from the first quarter of the previous year and essentially flat with the prior quarter. Both our Wireless Solutions and Wireless Components segments were similar in sales to prior periods.

Wireless Components Segment:

  • Wireless Components segment sales increased 3% over the prior year, with increases in relatively high margin military grade filters and frequency control modules for internet timing applications. Sales to automotive satellite radio applications decreased somewhat in comparison to the prior year. Combined, these changes contributed to an overall improved product mix from a gross margin standpoint.
  • Wireless Components segment sales are largely to the automotive, consumer and telecom markets. Sales to the automotive markets decreased 6% from the prior year’s first quarter, but increased 9% from our sequential fourth quarter, in line with automotive production schedules.

Wireless Solutions Segment:

  • Wireless Solutions segment sales decreased 2% from the prior year. Wireless Solutions segment sales are largely to the industrial and medical markets. The decrease from the prior year was largely due to a 35% reduction in sales to the medical market, as customers were attempting to reduce inventory. Partially offsetting this was a 22% increase in sales to the industrial market, which has been recovering in recent quarters.
  • Wireless Solutions segment sales decreased 1% from the prior quarter. While sales to medical customers were down from the peak levels of a year ago, they did increase 122% from the previous quarter as some inventory correction had been completed and the production delays that hurt sales in the previous quarter have been corrected. The large increase in medical sales also contributed to a more favorable product mix from a gross margin standpoint.
  • Fourth quarter operating expenses of $2.8 million were 9% greater than last year, but nearly the same as the previous quarter. Operating expenses as a percent of sales continued to be in the 32% to 33% range.
  • Other expense in the quarter ended November 30, 2009, included $160,000 in termination fees and other expenses related to the early termination of the agreement with our former senior lender. No such expenses occurred in the current year and interest expense has significantly decreased since the termination.
  • We generated positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Adjusted EBITDA) of $550,000 for the quarter, which matches the run rate of $2.2 million that we experienced for fiscal 2010.
  • Operating cash flow for our first quarter was a negative $232,000, primarily due to the repayment of $273,000 in customer advance payments that had been received last year. We have now repaid virtually all of those advances.
  • The arbitration process involving a dispute with CMS Liquidating Company has been completed and a final decision has been rendered in our favor. RFM was awarded compensation for legal fees and other expenses, which have been previously expensed, although no benefit has yet been recorded.

Non-GAAP Financial Measures (Adjusted EBITDA)

As a supplemental disclosure, we report Adjusted Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (including stock compensation) or Adjusted EBITDA. While this is a non-GAAP measure, this is a standard metric used by many companies to measure performance, particularly to measure cash flow performance before interest expenses are paid. Many financial institutions use this measure as part of their credit evaluation process. We believe that Adjusted EBITDA provides useful supplemental information to investors and offers a better understanding of results of operations as seen through the eyes of management and facilitates comparison to results for prior periods. We have chosen to provide this supplemental information to enable investors to perform additional comparisons of operating results and analyze financial performance without the impact of certain non-cash expenses that may obscure trends in our underlying performance. We use Adjusted EBITDA internally to make strategic decisions, forecast future results and evaluate our financial performance. This non-GAAP financial measure is not in accordance with, or an alternative for, GAAP financial measures and may differ from non-GAAP financial measures used by other companies. The presentation of the additional information should not be considered a substitute for net income (loss) in accordance with GAAP. Reconciliations of reported net income (loss) to Adjusted EBITDA are included below.
